Texas Public Schools

What is happening in Houston ISD?

The State of Texas has appointed a new Superintendent, Mike Miles to oversee the entirety Houston ISD as of June 2023. Additionally, there are 28 schools in the district that are undergoing major changes at the instruction of Miles. Two of the schools included are Kashmere High School and North Forest High School. The plan also includes pouring more funds into the lower performing schools, increasing pay for teachers working at “turnaround” schools, providing assistance to students outside of the classroom. However, it is not just the lives of the students that are seeing drastic changes. Teachers are to now teach through scripted lesson plans and must follow a daily schedule that is to be implemented by HISD leadership.

Why is this change happening?

State data shows that students in the lower performing schools have left High School being unprepared for higher education and the workforce. Local and State leaders have been blamed for the negligence and low performance and inadequate funding in HISD schools.

Why is this important?

Houston ISD is the largest school district in Texas and Houston itself is one of the largest cities in Texas that votes Democrat. The Texas Government imposing a Superintendent and altering the education structure can be seen as a breach and a way to introduce their own biased agenda.
