Border Crisis
Governor Greg Abbott has taken it upon himself to reinforce security along the US-Mexico border due to the influx of migrants. Measures such as barbed wire along the shore, increased border patrol and National Guard presence and the addition of a floating barrier in the river. Abbott has expressed officials should take “deadly force” with these migrants and is currently facing a federal lawsuit from the Department of Justice. Given the SB3 bill passed by Governor Abbott, the state has committed $1.54 billion to reinforcing the Texas southern border and allowed $40 billion for state troopers to patrol a neighborhood in Houston thought of being a magnet for undocumented migrants.
Additionally, Greg Abbott has signed the SB4 bill into law making illegal immigration a state crime as well as a federal crime. This enables local and state law enforcement to incarcerate undocumented immigrants and subject those they believe are undocumented to questioning.
